1) When and how did you first become interested in Art? How long have you been painting?
I have always been interested in art. especially graphic arts and illustration. It has always been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I have always drawn sketches, doodles, and some more involved drawings. I really didnt get into painting work on canvas until about three years ago or so. Ever since I started painting my whole out look on being an artist changed dramatically.
2) Who or what are your influences?
I am influenced by so many things. Some of my early inspiration came from vintage comic books, vintage hand drawn advertising, MAD Magazine, and the usual Saturday morning cartoons of the 80′s. Over my older years I became heavily influence by the “lowbrow” art movement and the whole art scene that dominates so much of Los Angeles and the West Coast in general. I started to follow several artist that I would learn about through different art mags, blogs, and Juxtapoz magazine. Artists like Joe Ledbetter, Gary Baseman, Tim Biskup, Greg”Craola”Simkins, David Hovarth, Buff Monster, the list can go on and on.
3) Must art have a relationship to the rest of the world?
No. I dont think so. Yet I do understand the role that the artist plays to tell the tale of the times we live in. I dont believe its necessary to incorporate the problems of the time in everything we create. Sometimes its good just to let go of reality and enter the imagination of someone else. I guess that in itself is also is in a relationship with the way the world is right now. I believe a lot of lowbrow, illustrative, cartooning, and surreal type of art work has grown in popularity because people are so tired of the death and despair that flashes across our television every minute of the day. It’s nice to escape and leave it behind when we can.
4) Describe what type of work you do in 3 words?
Dark,whimsical,illustrative
5) What do you want to be remembered for?
Not sure. Im much more than just some dude who paints. I want to be remembered as a good father, good husband, and a guy who really gave a shit about others and who was also very passionate about art, artist, and community.
6) What new projects are you currently working on? Will you be displaying anytime soon?
Well…I have a lot of things cooking right now. Im working on some clothing designs, hand sewn stuffed animals, and of course my paintings. I am always on display at Avondale Artworks Gallery here in Jacksonville. They host and artist reception every first Friday of each month and then the work is on display the entire month. Check them out at www.avondaleartworks.com. Other than that I am usually involved in 2-3 shows per month either here in town or out of town.
7) How do our viewers get in contact with you?
